Written by this wild guy :D

How is The Importance of Being Earnest a "comedy of manners"? What does this mean? How has it been shown in the play already?

Well in my opinion this is a comedy that makes fun of the manners that were expected by the people in society at the time Wilde wrote about it. The way this is shown in the play is by intentionally picking out some of the things that people were expected to follow for example, the way marriage was thought about, in those times people believed of marriage as a business and that hardly anyone would marry because of they were in love rather because they needed to find someone that would support them financially. Another way that Wilde makes fun of the way people needed to act was by the way he allows his characters to act, these characters are extremely foolish and could be thought of as crazy man that have nothing better to do but case one another for a cigarette box. The Importance of Being Earnest demonstrates how men in those times were spoiled little brats that had nothing to worry about and had enough money to get anything that they wanted and were maintained by their family members, this to the poor might seem very funny but those that actually decided to live that way might take it as an offense. Many are not fond of those that make fun of their way of life and that might be the reason why many did not like Wilde.

  1. I agree with what you said, man. The rich were spoiled but it wasnt just the men it was the women too like the Character that Kandy played and cecily too. Wilde had a kick ass way of explaining things that others can't.

  2. Certainly I agree with both of you. Mostly all the time, rich people are pampered and get everything their way. They also step on more unfortunate people to even get higher. Many times, the characters even sound stupid because of how much they depend on the money.
