[INSERT CLEVER COMMENT HERE]

How is The Importance of Being Earnest a "comedy of manners"? What does this mean? How has it been shown in the play already?
It's a comedy because it basically makes fun of the rich and what their opinions of manners really are. Things that are important like marriage aren't while eating cucumber sandwiches that are meant for someone else is very frowned upon. Comedy of Manners is another way of saying the way that they make fun of a person's Manners, Like they do with the rich people in the book. It has been shown in several ways. For example I mentioned earlier that Alge got pissed off because jack wanted to eat a cucumber sandwich. Pretty messed up if you asked me. I have a suspicion that he's fat too.

  1. I agree, they do make fun of rich people. All of the play is based on the importance of things for the rich people.

  2. yea they are making fun of them & showing what's important to them can be the littlest things instead of taking the big things serious.

  3. yea lisa you did not want me to eat that sandwich. That is I think the way that Wilde is able to show the reader that it is all about making fun of rich people.

  4. I think that it is very sad the way that the characters don't care about who they marry but they care about who eats their cucumber sandwiches.
