i agree with woolf that all fiction does need to be based on some reality because then it would just be very confusing and not so understandable. Its needs to be based on stuff we know so we can understand it. I don't really agree on the white light of truth though maybe Austen was writing in the red light and was still able to write a good book. she wrote on what happened to her and sort of ranting on that she will do what she wants to do and that she doesn't care about what others say but it still turned out to be a good book.
What argument I agree with??
I agree with what Virginia Woolf said about some authors and the way they write. I believe that some do actually write with the white light of truth and others with the red light of emotion. That ia some thing very cleaver that she was able to notice so long ago. Also the fact that she mentioned that fiction should always be attached to some sort of reality. In my opinion this gives the story a way in which the reader can relate to, it is also very true that all fiction is all also related these are all some arguments that I agree with Virginia Woolf.

Which parts of Virgnia Woolf's argument are most compelling to you? What do you agree with? Disagree with? Explain.
I can't really say which arguments are the ones that stick to me because its actually pretty hard to understand them in general. Even if I understand one of the arguments, majority of the time I agree. When she said, in the beginning of the book, that all we need is a money and a room of one's own, I think I remember people saying that they disagreed about the fact that you need money. I think she was right in a way, if she was trying to view things from a logical perspective. If she was then there are also several things that she left out. She would also need a place in which she can go to gather information and ideas, or "go fishing". yeah.

The parts that are the most compelling for me from the argument Woolf brings up is the fact that women were not given the same opportunity as men. Men had more opportunities to get an education, money and to write. The women were suppose to do what it was expected from them and not get adventures like men, ex: Shakespeare. The part stroke me the most because even though time has passed, we do get opportunities, but as much as men do
The truth!
I agree with the fact that writers write in either the red light of emotion or the white light of truth. Like that professor X guy, he doesn't agree with women writing and whatnot. He is stuck in the red light of emotion which is what the men in the time period were in. They did not see that women should write, they were stuck on the power and keeping women in the kitchen. The white light of truth is what I like about this because Virginia Woolf recognizes that we all have a part of us that holds the truth and we should all write about it to share the truth as a whole.
My mind went blank as soon as I read the question....
So, i don't like some of the feminist aspects of Woolf only because I feel like she takes extremes sometimes. Yes, men did not accept women as writers and only had few expectations of women that had nothing to do with knowledge. BUT do you really think that Shakespeare's sister would have killed herself? What she could have been successful because of the fact that her brother was only the most famous play writer of the time period? For all we know she could have been like Jane Austen or Virginia Woolf. We cannot underestimate the bravery of a woman, no matter what the time period is. The thing I do agree with Virginia Woolf on is that she believes in how amazing women can be as writers and that if you give them the space and time they can do even greater things that men have done.

Q:Which parts of Virgnia Woolf's argument are most compelling to you? What do you agree with? Disagree with? Explain.
A: The red light emotion is one of parts of Virgnia Woolf's argument that are compelling to me. Most of us well actually everyone uses red light emotion especially writers. Few people use the white light of truth and set apart all the anger they have towards someone or something. Woolf make us realize that we should find the truth instead of having the anger all inside of us.

Like a sir Lady!
What i most agree on is the fact that people need to write the truth. But then again what is the truth? The truth is different for all people so no one knows what is the truth. And now I sound all philosophical.
Here are some quotes I liked from the book. Enjoy!
- "'Wise men never say what they think of women' Wise men never say anything else apparently."
- " I need not hate men; he cannot hurt me. I need not flatter any man; he has nothing to give me"
- "Great bodies of people are never responsible for what they do"

Hmmm The Argument.....
Which parts of Virgnia Woolf's argument are most compelling to you? What do you agree with? Disagree with? Explain.
During the book the argument that is most compelling to me is when she starts to talk about how the professor had a red light emotion by the way he was describe in the book how he was so angry that he was holding back the truth. In her argument is that is is better to write in the white light of emotion so the truth can be set free and be brought the light. I totally agree with Virgnia Woolf because i personally think it is right to write in the white light of truth so that people can get there truth out and plus if you write in the red light then everything on the page will not be true and angry can go towards a certain person or group of people.

this new layout is confusing...
Which parts of Virgnia Woolf's argument are most compelling to you? What do you agree with? Disagree with? Explain.
The argument that is most compelling to me is that women need a room of their own to write in. I don't think that they need a small quiet room to write in because what are they going to write about? There's nothing going on in there. I think it's better that they write where there's distractions because that way, they can write about the world around them and what's going on. For example, Jane Austen wrote in the living room where it was busy all the time. Look at how popular Pride and Prejudice still is today. She wrote about what the people around her were doing. If she were to sit in a quiet room by herself, she probably write something like "Sitting in a room. Nothing is happening." That's boring. So I don't think you need a room of your own to write.

Virginia Woolf's
Woolf's argument that Bronte wrote with the red light of emotion and Austen wrote in the white light of truth. I though Austen wrote in the red light of emotion but seen Woolf's points comparing Bronte and Austen's writing I realize she was not. I agree with her points because Austen wrote with what she knew and saw in society and in the end of Pride and Prejudice Elizabeth does get married which is what society wanted but she married someone she loved. If she was writing with the red light of emotion she would have kept Elizabeth single and independent. Bronte in the other hand the man goes blind and the wife in the attic died the girl survives and happily ever after but with very bad consequences.

:p
she might need a good office, a good mind full of ideas, a good environment like a good neighbor hood thats quiet. maybe a garden to think and write outside. Family for support a staff like a editor. She cant have many distractions either because it can ruin the mind process.
-_-
Ummmmmmm...
I guess some imagination. And some logic. You have to know how to get yourself out there as well as being able to yourself out there too. And nowadays we don't write books with a pencil and paper anymore Noonan, we use computers. ha.
Support from my family and friends would help too, which is what Virginia Woolfe didn't have. She had support from family i think but not from any other people. Knowledge is a given for writing as well.
comment on kandys post
yes Kandy is right a woman should stop being afraid of living in a mans world. And think she is also able to succeed and will not be put down by a man. That is also very important I give you props
The weather is nice :P
Virgnia Woolf argues that in order to write, a woman must have money and a room of her own. What would you add to that list? Think beyond just "pen," and "paper." If you wanted to spend your lifetime writing, what would you need--both literally and figuratively?
In my opinion in order for a woman to spend the rest of her life time writing she would need money and a room to herself. She should also use other books as a nice guide to help her expand her knowledge. Books would help her think of things that other people have not written about and that would make her stuff unique. Also another thing that a woman might need is support, she would need this in order to feel confident that she is doing a good job or else none of her things would seem worth living for. Another thing is passion, a woman must have the passion to write so she can feel good and positive that her stories will later be intriguing to the reader. Another thing that a woman must need to be able to become a writer is connections with other people that will help her expand worldwide and therefore become greatly known all over the place. She will need to make friends so they can also help her out in accomplishing her goals.

It isn't really as simple as wolf described. But then again, nothing ever is. One of the things that a woman would need is the ability to go out and wander. If you're stuck in one room then you won't be able to grasp ideas out of thin air. You need to "go fishing". Another thing that you would need is a person to either input ideas or to see if your ideas are good too. You Need at least a little of education. I think thats about everything. Yeah.
hmm what would i add
I have many things that I would like to add to her list. In order to write I think you should have passion because if you don't have passion then you not going to be able to sit down and write about something you love. Another thing I would add is you have to set a goal for yourself that you are going to write because you want to but not for anyone else reasons.
Brains!!!!
i agree with virgina wolf you do need money and a room of your own to be able to write. i also think that in order to write a woman also needs to have a brain in other words she needs to have knowledge of some sort. she needs the ability to understand what she is writing about. if she understands what she is writing about her readers will understand as well.
